We listened to some of my favorite classic CD's to celebrate Black History month.
They included:
The Cannonball Adderley Quintet in San Francisco
Thelonius Monk Quartet with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall
Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker
Mingus Ah Um
Oscar Peterson Trio with Sonny Stitt, Roy Eldridge and Jo Jones
and one of my all time favorites Duke Ellington and John Coltrane

We also listened to Mike Essoudry's new CD "Mash Potatoe Mashers" and Peter Hum's new CD called "A Boys Journey"

We talked to singer Patricia Cano and listened to her latest CD "This is the New World" .

We also listened to the latest CD by Kelly Jefferson called "Next Exit" and the latest from Chucho Valdes called "Chuchos Steps"

Keeping with the Latin theme and Brecker theme we listened to the tune Rainsville from the CD Medianoche by pianist Don Grolnick.
And finally we went back a few years to check out "Vow of Silence" from the Ottawa based band, Los Gringos.

We had a nice interview in the second hour with Ottawa musician Mark Ferguson.
Mark talked about his newest CD that he recorded with saxophonist Mike Tremblay, called "Home" We also talked about and listened to the CD "Vow of Silence"by Los Gringos which Mark co-leads and "Onward " from the Toronto based band Manteca which Mark is a member of.

In the first hour we listened to Dixie Hop a tune written by saxophonist Bill Evans and performed by the group Soul Bop. It is from thier CD entitled "Soul Bop Live"

We listened to New York trumpet player/composer Alex Sipiagin from his 2004 CD Equilibrium. It includes David Binney, Chris Potter, Scott Colley, Dave Kikoski and Gene Jackson. It is well worth it to check out this CD and the rest of Alex Sipiagin's music.

Brad Meldau's CD Highway Rider was another one of our selections. This includes Joshua Redman, Larry Grenadier and Jeff Ballard.

Kenny Garrett ended the first hour with a selection called Wayne's Thang off the Casino Lights '99 CD.

Hi,

Sorry but I was a little late getting this up for the Nov. 22nd show. So here it goes....

Some of the CD's we listened to included:
Michael Brecker's -- "Time is of the Essence"
Esperanza Spualding -- "Chamber Music Society"
Bill Evans -- "Final Village Vanguard Recordings".

We also talked about and high lighted the new big band CD from Montreal Trumpet player/ Arranger Joe Sullivan.

The new CD is called Northern Ontario Suite. It features the writing and arranging of Joe Sullivan and features some of Montreal's best musicians.

It is available through Effendi Records

We covered quite a bit on Monday's show. We had Jarrod Goldsmith come in and talk about his experiences volunteering at the Ottawa Jazz Festival this year. Jarrod was able to meet and talk to David Sanborn and Herbie Hancock.

We covered alot on this show. We started off with a CD by Gordon Goodwin and his Big Phat Band called Act You Age. We played a couple of tracks from Brad Meldau's new CD Highway Rider. We also listened to Joshua Redmans new CD Compass. We talked about the band James Farm which features Joshua Redman, Aaron Parks, Matt Penman and Eric Harland will be appearing at the Ottawa International Jazz Festival in June. The aim of this blog is to have a place for our listeners to go to locate any CD titles and links that we talked about on the show.

Brooklyn Jazz Underground is a great record label that we talked about and you should check out. They have a great compilation CD that I received when I ordered a CD by a group called ACT
